About
In an attempt to avoid some long, drawn out, college thesis on my life, I thought I’d just throw down some key catagories and elaborate from within each one.
Geography: Raised in Deer Park, TX (a small, cookie cutter town filled with white people who thrive on the chemical plant-littered Houston Ship Channel) I grew up knowing that one day I’d be a famous actor! (…cricket…cricket…) Ooookay, so that didn’t pan out. Hey, the way I see it, kids are supposed to be filled with dreams. That’s why we adults envy them so. But, needless to say, my geographical childhood was stagnant enough to encourage much self-expression (hence, this music website). I still reside in Houston, TX but in a much more colorful, cultural, and inspiring zip code.
Melody: I can vividly remember the day I became a singer/songwriter. At a party in the summer of 1999, I ran into a friend of mine who had recently picked up the guitar. ”Hey, look what I learned,” he said and began to play “41″ by The Dave Matthews Band. Here, it is crucial to note that in the mid 90s, DMB became my best friend (figuratively) and eventually became my strongest musical influence (literally). Thus, as “41″ rang from the guitar, my first thought was “Holy $#@!,” and my second thought was “I can do that”. Over the next few years, I would learn to play the guitar through the songs of many influencial artists such as DMB, Duncan Sheik, John Mayer, and Jeff Buckley. Eventually, this process lead me to songwriting, which has developed into what you hear today.
Pedagogy: After a few years of the college dropout life, my impulsive adolescence began to wane. My fingernails and backhair retracted, my testosterone levels stabilized, and my perspective on higher education drastically changed. So, in 2005, I went back to (and stayed in) school. Majoring in English and minoring in Education, I received my B.A. from the University of Houston in the spring of 2009 and currently teach English at Lamar High School. My return to college has become the 3rd best decision I’ve made in life. The 2nd, after a pack-a-day-decade, was to quit smoking.
Charity: The 1st was to approach Vida. More than anyone else, she has helped me see exactly who I was, who I am, and who I want to be (no offense to every other person I’ve met). My skin wouldn’t feel quite as comfortable without her. Peace.
